Alright, so I decided to spend a bit of time focusing on Iñigo Martínez. Not really sure why his name popped into my head, maybe saw a clip somewhere, but I thought, okay, let’s use that as a focus for today’s practice session.

My main goal wasn’t anything too grand. I just wanted to break down some defensive plays. Sometimes you watch a game and things happen so fast, you don’t really see the small details. So, I pulled up some footage. Found a few games he played in recently.
First, I just watched. Let the game flow for about 15 minutes. Then, I started focusing only on him whenever his team was defending. This was harder than it sounds. The camera follows the ball, obviously, so you lose the player sometimes. Had to do a lot of rewinding.
My process was pretty basic:
- Watch a defensive sequence involving him.
- Rewind. Watch it again, slower if possible.
- Jot down quick notes. Like, really messy notes.
- Look specifically at his body shape before a tackle.
- Tried to see how he anticipated passes.
Spent a good hour just doing this loop. Rewind, watch, scribble. Rewind, watch, scribble. It got a bit tedious, not gonna lie. Especially when trying to track off-the-ball movement. But I stuck with it.
Key things I picked up
Found myself noticing how he positions himself relative to the attacker and the ball. It wasn’t just about charging in. A lot of it was about blocking passing lanes, even just subtly shifting his weight. Also saw moments where he’d communicate a lot with his teammates, pointing and directing. It’s not just about individual skill, is it?

Didn’t really come away with some magic formula or anything. It was more about appreciating the little things defenders do. The constant scanning, the small adjustments. Felt like I got a slightly better eye for that stuff now. Took longer than I expected, mainly because finding the right clips and rewatching took ages. But yeah, that was my session focused on Iñigo Martínez. Just a simple observation practice, really.
