Max Greyserman: From Ukraine to the PGA Tour, a Jewish Journey

Alright, so you wanna know about this fella, Max Greyserman, huh? Well, lemme tell ya what I heard. This boy, Max, he’s one of them Jewish fellas. Yeah, Jewish. Born way back in 1995, May 31st to be exact, in a place called Millburn, New Jersey. Fancy name, ain’t it? Short Hills, they call that part. His folks, Alex and Elaine, that’s their names, they weren’t from around here originally.

See, his mommy and daddy, they come from a faraway place called Kyiv. That’s in Ukraine now, but back then, it was part of somethin’ called the Soviet Union. Big country, or so they say. They weren’t tourists or nothin’; they were what they call refugees. Means they had to leave their home ’cause things weren’t so good over there. Came to America when they were just teenagers, can you believe it? Young’uns, just like my grandkids.

Now, these two, Alex and Elaine, they meet up at a place called Rutgers University. Smart folks, I guess, ’cause his daddy even got himself a Ph.D. Don’t ask me what that is, sounds like somethin’ complicated. Anyways, they settle down, have this boy Max, and he grows up speakin’ Russian first. Yeah, Russian! Not English like us regular folk. But he learned English alright, speaks it just fine now, from what I hear.

  • Born: May 31, 1995
  • Place of Birth: Millburn, New Jersey (Short Hills)
  • Parents: Alex and Elaine Greyserman
  • Parents’ Origin: Kyiv, Ukraine (formerly Soviet Union)
  • Religion: Jewish
  • First Language: Russian

So, this Max, he ain’t no farmer or factory worker like the folks around here. He’s a golfer. A PGA Tour golfer, they say. That’s a big deal, I reckon. Means he’s good at hittin’ that little white ball with them fancy sticks. Travels all over the place, playin’ in tournaments and such. Almost won one of them big ones recently, just missed it by a hair. Folks were all talkin’ about it.

He’s a young fella still, got his whole life ahead of him. Seems like he’s doin’ alright for himself, this Max Greyserman. Jewish boy from New Jersey, parents from Ukraine, speakin’ Russian first, now hittin’ golf balls for a livin’. America, I tell ya, it’s a place where anything can happen. You can be born one place, your folks from another, and you end up doin’ somethin’ completely different. That’s the way it is, I guess.

You can look him up online, they got all sorts of stuff about him. Pictures and videos and whatnot. PGA Tour website, they call it. Got all the stats and info you could ever want. Me? I ain’t got no computer, just hear things from the neighbors and the TV. But from what I gather, he’s a good kid, this Max. Works hard, plays golf, makes his folks proud. That’s all that matters, ain’t it?

So there you have it. That’s the story of Max Greyserman, as best as I can tell ya. Jewish fella, good golfer, parents from Ukraine. What more do you need to know? He ain’t from around here, but he’s made a name for himself. And that’s somethin’ to be proud of, no matter where you come from.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go make some supper. All this talkin’ makes a body hungry.
