Alright, so I got curious the other day about what Charl Schwartzel is actually playing with. You know, what’s in the bag, or WITB as they call it. He’s been around a while, won the Masters, bounced around tours a bit. Figured I’d take a look myself instead of just reading the headlines.
So, I started digging. First thing, just a general search online. Man, you get a lot of noise. Old articles, stuff from years ago, lists that totally contradict each other. It’s like everyone just copies everyone else, and half the info is stale.
I wanted something more current. Thought I’d try looking at recent tournament pictures. Sometimes you can get a decent look at the clubs, the headcovers, maybe the putter. Spent a bit of time squinting at photos from some of the LIV events and wherever else he’s popped up. It helps a little, you can sometimes make out a brand logo or the shape of a clubhead.
Then I remembered some of those golf gear forums and equipment sites. Not the big news places, but the spots where guys really geek out over this stuff. Started poking around there, searching for threads about Schwartzel. Found a few discussions, people posting what they think he’s using, sometimes based on seeing him at events or insider whispers. You gotta take it with a grain of salt, obviously, but sometimes you find nuggets.
After piecing things together from photos, forum chats, and filtering out the really old info, I started making a list. It’s never perfect, these guys swap stuff all the time, but here’s roughly what I reckon he’s got in the bag right now, or at least very recently.
My Best Guess at Charl’s Setup
- Driver: Looked like a TaylorMade driver, maybe one of the newer Stealth models, but hard to be 100% sure from the angles I saw.
- Fairway Woods: Seemed like he had a couple of TaylorMade fairway woods too. Again, matching the driver usually makes sense.
- Irons: This was trickier. He’s famous for using those old Mizuno MP-4 blades for ages. Some folks were saying he might still have some version of Mizuno irons, maybe mixed with something else? Saw some mention of PXG too, maybe the 0311 T irons? He’s definitely a blade guy for the most part, that much seems clear.
- Wedges: Looked like Vokey wedges, probably SM9s? That’s a pretty standard choice for tour pros. Saw maybe three of them.
- Putter: His putter seems to change a bit, but often it’s some kind of custom job or an older model he likes. Saw chatter about him using different brands over the last year or so. Couldn’t get a solid ID on the current one.
- Ball: Pretty safe bet he’s playing a Titleist Pro V1 or Pro V1x, like half the tour.
So yeah, that’s what I landed on after my little investigation. It’s a bit of a mix, like a lot of pros. They stick with what works for them, even if it’s not the latest shiny thing. Especially someone like Charl who’s got such great hands and feel. Finding this stuff out takes a bit more effort than you’d think, but it’s interesting to see what gear these top players trust.
Of course, he could change it all next week! That’s just how it goes with pro golfers and their equipment. Always tinkering.
